A Winkler-Morden hockey player has been signed by the Victoria Royals of the WHL.
15-year-old forward Trent Crane, was inked to the standard player agreement, Aug. 27.
Crane was selected in the fifth round, 103rd overall, by the Royals in the 2018 Bantam draft in May.
The former Pembina Valley Hawks Bantam AAA player said a late season injury lowered his draft prospects. That meant he travelled to camp without being signed to a contract.
“I knew I was going to have to go down to Victoria and show them a good camp and see what happens,” he said.
It was clear the team took notice of the 5’9” 167 pound forward from Manitoba.
Royals President and General Manager Cameron Hope offered Crane a contract, saying they’re excited to welcome him to the organization.
“Trent is a fast, skilled and tenacious forward with hockey IQ,” Hope said. “We are pleased to have signed Trent and excited to see his future as part of our team.”
Crane is playing with players up to five years older than him, many with a few more inches and pounds than he has.
“I learned when I was little as long as I’m moving my feet no one can catch me,” he said. “Size wasn’t going to drag me down.”
Crane hopes to improve his defensive play and increase his speed to stay ahead of the game.
Though he was the league’s fourth highest scorer last year with 70 points in 36 games, he has no illusions that feat must be repeated this year.
“I feel like my role right now as a rookie is just to play my game and do what I do best,” he said.
Crane said becoming a scoring leader and being drafted has a lot to do with the support of his former teammates.
His parents too, have made a big impact. “They’ve helped me get to where I am today,” he said. “I couldn’t do it without them.”
Joining the Victoria Royals has also been a smooth transition.
“All the guys here, the organization for the Royals is unbelievable,” he said. “I love the rink and the veterans here are unreal. They lead the way for the team.”
Crane has taken part in pre-season play and is looking forward to the regular season getting underway on Sept. 7.
“I just want to say thanks to Cam Hope for giving me a contract,” he added.
