The 12th annual Thanks for Giving Run will take place Oct. 6 at the Winkler Arena.
Race Director Dwight Suderman said they hope to see big numbers once again, which will allow them to donate funds to a great cause.
“The money that we raise, we give to the Winkler Food Cupboard,” he said. “Last year we raised $10,000.”
Winkler’s Thanks for Giving Run began in 2007 by a group of passionate runners who wanted to make a difference in the community while doing what they loved. It is held annually on the Saturday morning of Thanksgiving weekend.
Each year, this run has helped the Winkler and District food cupboard meet the needs of the community and Suderman said approximately half of the food cupboard’s annual budget is generated by this run.
The Thanks for Giving Run offers something for everyone with a half marathon (21.1K), 10K, 5K, and a 1.2K kids fun run. They have seen numbers of racers rise from about 50 to just over 200. Runners come from throughout the province, the U.S, and as far as British Columbia.
This year’s event will see the kids race (free to enter) start at 8:30 a.m. The other categories will begin at 9 a.m.
Those who register before Sept. 24 will get an early bird rate: half marathon – $60, 10K – $35 and 5K – $25.
Those prices increase to $70, $45 and $30 after Sept. 24.
All runner will receive a shirt, and children will earn a cookie medal.
Suderman said last year’s event brought in close to 175 people, adding registrations are slow this year.
“We’re encouraging a lot of the local people to enter,” he said. “We also encourage walkers in the 5K and 10K events.
Entrants are also encouraged to bring a tin for the bin, to help support the Winkler Food Cupboard.
