The Winkler Chamber of Commerce hosted a council candidate meet and greet, Oct. 4 at Winkler Arts & Culture.
Executive Director Tanya Chateauneuf said this was the first time they’ve hosted an event like this, adding the idea came from the candidates.
“I think the most important thing is recognizing that we have some forward thinking candidates running in this election and it was really their idea to come together as a group, and put on this meet and greet,” she said. “They asked the chamber to partner and we’re happy to do that.”
Chateauneuf said this is a great addition to the pre-election events which included an all candidates forum scheduled for Oct. 10.
“It’s a great casual atmosphere for people to feel comfortable and ask some questions before the actual election and the more formal forum,” she said.
Often candidates will host their own meet the candidate events, and Chateauneuf said this is a more effective way to bring the community together.
“It really is a trial run for us and we have high hopes that it will be successful for the candidates and Winkler residents,” she said.
The chamber of commerce is non-partisan, and Chateauneuf said their message is simple. “We really encourage everyone to get out and vote,” she said. “It’s your right and it’s really important.”
