The members of the Plum Coulee and District Chamber of Commerce have an interesting agenda for their next meeting coming up Tuesday November 17, at Sunset Diner. Two guest speakers from the DAWN program in Winkler will address the meeting. First they'll explain what DAWN – Determining & Addressing Workplace Needs – was all about, why it was developed, and the goals outlined.

What the DAWN program seeks to do is help employers and employees alike, with Workplace Skills Initiative, especially for Manufacturing employers. This program was especially helpful for newcomers to Canada, so they could be employed in jobs within their skill level. In the metal sector such as welding, up to 11 employees have participated in this program at Meridian Industries. Some 14 employees at Conquest in the wood sector have also been helped. From one to five employees in general manufacturing, including Giesbrecht Machining in Plum Coulee, were involved in this curriculum. Whether you're a Chamber member, or any interested resident who would like to see the DAWN program at work in Plum Coulee, be sure to attend and hear Carol Gavard, project co-ordinator; and George Penner, skills developer share about the benefits of this program. That's November 17 at 12 noon, one hour only, and enjoy the DAWN sponsored lunch while you listen and ask questions.

SNOWBIRDS AND CANADA GEESE

It seems the snowbirds know when to leave for a warmer clime, just like the Canada Goose! Whereas the geese take to their wings in large numbers, the Snowbirds pack a lot into their van and take off on the road. That's what Jake and Katie Penner did on the first day of this month, and headed to their winter destination in Arizona! Safe traveling resulted in a happy landing in record time, and a joyful reunion with their snowbird neighbors in Arizona!

NEW IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

"The house that love built", that's house #359 Sunset Bay, Allan and Marge Ruttan, and sons Jonah and Jerod, moved into their lovely house just recently. Not only is it new, but the work was done by Allan and Marge and many of their siblings. That's of special significance to the family occupying it. They like their location, their neighbours, and the two boys enjoy their school here. Allan is employed at Canadian Tire Corp. and Marge has employment in Winkler. Welcome to Plum Coulee, and wishing you years of making happy memories on Sunset Bay!

ARENA ACTION

A great season on the ice is in full swing at the local arena. The Xpress hockey team has a full schedule of at-home and away games, with the next at-home game on the 14th. Then there's some free skating for physical stimulation, plus rental activities, and of course the Canteen for snacks. Andreas Termer is the custodian this season, to keep the arena functioning, lit up, and ice in top skating condition...all organized by a competent Sports Committee led by Pres Jim Loewen.

FROM FARM TO TOWN - VICE VERSA

Farming runs in the family for Edward Giesbrecht. His father was a grain farmer; Ed was raised on the farm and went into farming for himself in 1969, and he's still involved in that occupation. But after 40 years on the farm, and 32 of those years after marriage to Grace, a move was made. Plum Coulee has always been his home stomping ground – school, church, community involvement, so it was logical for Ed and Grace to make their next move into the town of Plum Coulee. They raised two daughters and one son on the farm north of town, who have all moved on to their own occupations. However son Kevin and his wife Alyson moved from town to take up residence on the family farm north of Coulee. So farming still "runs in the family" for the Giesbrechts. At the same time we welcome Ed and Grace to their new residence on Sunset Bay. May settling in and feeling at home here come easily for you!

LULLABY LYRICS

"You are my sunshine" is probably one of the lullaby lyrics that little Tori Addison will be hearing in the coming days! Tori, the first child for Warren and Jodi Giesbrecht, weighed in at 7 lbs, 11 oz on November 4th. On the measuring tape she showed a tall 21 inches! Besides her parents, also welcoming her are her maternal grandparents, Peter and Grace Dueck of Blumenfeld, and paternal grandparents Corny and Elvira Giesbrecht of Plum Coulee! She has several cousins just waiting for her to "grow up" to play with them. But in the meantime, lullaby songs and lots of cuddling will be what she will enjoy the most! Congratulations, Warren and Jodi! Enjoy your new little treasure!

They had been waiting for quite a while, and at last the day came for their new arrival.

Nathan and Suzy Hiebert welcomed their second child, an adorable dark-haired son on October 26. Both mom and baby are doing very well, and so is big brother, two-year-old Bailey. In fact, Bailey is generous with hugs and kisses for little brother Griffin Cole, who by the way, tipped the scales at 8 lbs 13 oz.

Besides his parents and big brother, Griffin has quite a lineup of ancestors to look up to. There are the maternal great-grandparents Isaac and Katherina Friesen; and maternal grandparents, John and Katherina Krahn, all of Winkler. On his daddy's side, there are grandparents Bill and Mary Hiebert of Winkler. Surrounded with a loving family and kind neighbours, both Griffin and Bailey can look forward to happy growing-up years! Congratulations – Nathan and Suzy!

It wasn't a secret to the Rempel family, but it took a while for the news to filter down to this writer! But it's still a pleasure to say "Congratulations" to Isaac and Susanne Rempel on the arrival of another grandson.

A loving welcome awaited this newcomer, named Victor Brandt, second son for Kevin and Rosella (Rempel) Janz of Lowe Farm. Victor Brandt made his debut back in July, right after Canada Day. He was a big boy at 9 lbs 3 oz, and immediately sported a thatch of dark hair! His "big" brother Malcolm started the trend for having dark hair at birth. Besides the maternal grandparents Isaac and Susanne Rempel of Plum Coulee, Victor's paternal grandparents are Henry and Elaine Janz of Rosenfeld. He's grandson No. 2 for them.
